在同一天,国家暂停纪念退伍军人的武装部队, the University of Denver announced plans to increase its financial commitment to those who have served the country through the 黄丝带计划.
“我们需要让退伍军人接受全面的教育,” said DU Chancellor Rebecca Chopp while announcing the doubling of resources to the program.
The Post-9/11 GI Bill covers tuition 和 fees for veterans attending an in-state 和 public institution. Universities that participate in the 黄丝带计划 make additional funds available for veterans attending an out-of-state or private university. 美国.S. Department of Veterans Affairs matches all contributions made by an institution.
“We double our resources 和 the government doubles its commitment to these veterans,” Chopp said. “We hope that we will provide our veterans more resources 和 also attract more veterans to the University of Denver.”
“这使得退伍军人更能负担得起DU. It makes DU more attractive to veterans,” says Damon Vine, DU’s veteran services coordinator. “减轻经济负担意味着, 希望, 更高的分数, because there is less stress about worrying where finances are coming from.”
The announcement was made on Veterans Day during the University of Denver’s It provided an opportunity for alumni 和 the community to hear from faculty about how the University is leading the discussion on this important topic.
“The faculty we have at DU provides a length of insight that I think provides perspective beyond just a moment in time,布兰登·巴兹比说, 负责大学发展的副校长. “This event is really about asking some of the big questions 和 getting insight around the long-term implications of things like the presidential election 和 underst和ing what happens domestically 和 internationally.”
It addresses the increased need for psychologists with expertise in assisting veterans with the particular issues they face. The program has two key components: an educational track that prepares graduate students to work with veterans 和 their families; 和 the Sturm中心这是一家面向所有退伍军人及其家属的诊所.
“The clinic is training health professionals 和 training budding psychologists to be specialists in this field,凯蒂·巴尔斯说, 斯特姆中心的诊所主任. “我们实际上是在提供个体化治疗, 退伍军人的团体治疗和家庭治疗, 军人和他们的家人.”
All of the therapists at the Sturm中心 are GSPP students training to be clinical psychologists 和 learning about the health disparities that face the military 和 veteran population.
“We are trying to do the things that we know work 和 take the things that we see are not working in different parts of the community, 在心理和行为健康方面, 和 change that up 和 make it a little bit more effective for our veterans 和 service members.,” said Jacob Hyde, faculty director of the Sturm军事心理学专业.
The work both Hyde 和 Barrs are doing together sets DU’s program apart from many others across the country.
“There are a lot of 项目 that are doing the clinical piece 和 there are a lot of 项目 that are doing the in-class piece. We are one of the only ones that is integrating both pieces together,” Barrs said.
